11 convicted in fake insurance claim case

A CBI special court in Dharwad has convicted 11 persons, including government servants, for criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal misconduct.

The special court judge H C Sham Prasad has sentenced the accused to three-year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 79,500. If the convicted fail to pay the fine, they will have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for six months.

The convicted are; S D Patil, advocate, Dr Mohan P Kalekar, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at MGM Hospital in Nippani, Jayaram Bhima Kamble, a Head Constable attached to Nippani Rural police station, Raju Dundappa Uppar, an insurance agent, Dr Rajkumar B Kopp, orthopaedic surgeon at Shantha nursing home in Gokak and private persons Kempanna Siddappa Vodeyar, Basappa Lakshman Herevoli, Bhimappa Gireppa Totagi, Lakappa Ningappa Bilade and Shivappa Burmappa Banase.

CBI had registered the case in April 2009 based on a source information. The prosecution case was that during the year 2005 the accused had entered into a criminal conspiracy with private persons to fake the settlement of motor vehicle accident claims.

Advocate S D Patil had filed five motor vehicle accident claims in the name of the persons who had not met with the accident. This was established through records at Nippani rural police station. The accused fabricated medical certificates and caused a loss of Rs 20.33 lakh to the government.
