Chikmagalur tense but under control

Last Updated 30 December 2013, 03:24 IST

The security situation in Chikmagalur town remained tense but under control on Sunday, a day after clashes between two communities.

Most shops and commercial establishments, however, remained shut as prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC had been imposed. More police personnel have been deployed on M G Road and I G Road — the two thoroughfares where a mob had forced shops to shut down.

Schools and colleges will function as usual on Monday as Section 144 is expected to be lifted on Sunday midnight. But police will step up vigil in the town for two more days, according to B S Shekarappa, the Deputy Commissioner.

Minister’s visit

District In-charge Minister, K Abhayachandra Jain, on Sunday visited the place of worship where miscreants had placed the carcass of an animal on Saturday morning, which led to communal flare-ups. He said police had been directed to bring the culprits to book.
