The nomination paper filing processions of Bagalkot Congress candidate and MLA H Y Meti and BJP candidate former MLA Veeranna Chirathimatha clashed on the streets leading to chaos in Bagalkot on Monday.

The two processions met at Basaveshwara Circle in the town. At that moment, party workers and supporters stepped up their slogan shouting by many a decibel.

While Congress workers shouted slogans in favour of AICC president Rahul Gandhi, BJP supporters raised slogans in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The crossover soon turned into a fracas in which the opposing party workers tugged and shoved and hurled abuses at each other. Police and paramilitary forces personnel intervened to disperse the crowd by a mild lathi charge.

Hunagunda MLA Vijayanand Kashyappanavar took part in the procession. Trouble broke out between BJP and Congress workers when his supporters carried him on their shoulders and shouted slogans.
