Unable to bear the humiliation after she was arrested by the local police on charges of kidnapping a child, a woman reportedly hanged herself in the barrack at Dharwad Central Prison early in the morning on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Surekha Pratap Kavadi (23), who was accused of kidnapping a newborn girl child from KIMS hospital in Hubballi on January 25.
According to the police, Surekha committed suicide in the jail barrack by using her veil to strangulate herself.
She had been lodged in the jail after being arrested by the police. A resident of Laxmisinganakeri slum in Dharwad, she had allegedly posed as a staff nurse at KIMS and had kidnapped a newborn child as she had no children. The police had arrested the accused on January 26 and recovered the child.
On Thursday, DGP H N Sathyanarayan Rao visited the Central Prison and conducted a preliminary inquiry.
