Kerala flavour in Port City

Chende, pookulams, traditional dances and a mouth watering 'Onam Sadhya' (Festive meal) gave Mangaloreans a true slice of God's Own Country.

The Onam celebrations were organised by the Kerala Samajam at TMA Pai Hall in Mangalore on Saturday.

The entire venue, was in a festive mood. With the sound of the Chende echoing all over, guests received a traditional welcome from ladies donning the traditional Kerala Sarees.
A man who was dressed as King Mahabali, was the centre of attraction.

The entrance had beautiful 'Pookulams' (flower carpets) each with a lamp in the centre. The programme began with traditional Kerala dances. The inaugural lamp was lit by Distrcit-In-Charge Minister Ramanath Rai, who opined that Kerala and DK district are similar in many ways, with regard to culture, tradition, food, religious celebrations and others.

He also assured support to the petition of Kerala Samajam, requesting two acre land to construct a Bhavan in the district.

Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, said Onam is a true celebration of unity among all diversities. Kerala is a role model to the entire nation, with regard to its development, upholding tradition, culture and also promoting tourism.

He also said that the coastal districts have a huge population of Keralities, who have blended well in the district.

The greater Mangalore will be developed till Kerala border on one side, Mulki and Bajpe on other sides. A sum of Rs 240 crore has been allotted for the second phase work to be taken up by KUDCEMP, he said.

Health Minister U T Khader, said that Onam truly celebrates Universal Brotherhood. This fiesta is celebrated by all, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, he said.

A sumptuous Onam Sadhya, was the highlight of the programme. More than 1,000 people, enjoyed the traditional Kerala meal.

Authentic Kerala dishes such as Aviyal, Thoran, Ingi Curry, Koottukari, Fruit Curry, Kaalan, Puliyinchi, kichidi, pachadi, parippu, banana chips, jaggery chips, Parthamam, Ada Payasam were served.
