However, what the people in Kolar have not tasted is the new brand in the market. Mixed with chilli powder, pepper powder, salt, chat masala along with a dash of butter, the ‘hot and spicy,’ sweet corn (maize) is what many have not tasted.

And now this has become the rage here among the youth who have already got used to the street-food like pani puri, masala puri, gobi manchuri, and oily stuffs like vade, bonda and the other khara items.

If they want to savour the new taste, then they should head to MG Road in the city. The new item has quietly made its entry to Kolar from Bangalore about two months back. This is the new combination of butter and raw maize or as the Americans call it sweet corn.

Misleading

Even those who stroll on MG Road first think that it is an ice cream cart and pass on. But what they give there is not ice cream but sweet corn in an ice cream cup!

The push cart which is big enough for a man to swing his arms to the left and right has a small stove burning not visible to the customer.

The vessel placed on that will have the sweet corn being steamed. In front of the vessel there are four small vessels containing chilli powder, salt, pepper powder and chat masala.

Butter masala

The first question the push cart owner asks is “what type of khara you want?” Once the choice is made, he mixes the required khara with butter for about a minute. Afterwards he fills it in a white paper cup and gives.

When one wonders whether Rs 10 per cup is not costly, he points to the butter rate. On Saturday evening a group of college youth had parked themselves in front of the cart.

Only those who have been to Bangalore know about the taste. But not many in Kolar know about this new savoury.

“We opened the shop about two months back. We get the corn from Bangalore. This is a new taste and not many know about this. Those who know the taste come and pack ten to twenty cups and take it,” said Harish.

There are two such sweet corn push carts in the city and both are parked on MG Road.

The business starts at 6 pm and amidst the hustle and bustle of the town, both do brisk business. Once the mouth tastes the corn, it demands more and without your knowledge you order for the second one.
