No basic facilities for villagers in Nemmar

Last Updated 25 October 2018, 11:56 IST

Even after seventy years of independence, the villagers under Nemmar Gram Panchayat limits in Sringeri, have not been able to get basic amenities.

People of Kumbragodu, Koogodu, Balekadi, Kyakarike, Kesagodu, Adikesu, Hemmige, Meenagaradi and other villages have been depending on a makeshift bridge to travel to the town.

The Malnad village, 30 km away from Sringeri town, is a naxal infested area. The footbridges built across various streams at Hemmige, Meenagaradi and Mundodi are in a dangerous condition. 20 families are dwelling in Hemmige, 18 families in Meenagaradi and 16 families in Mundodi.

There are no basic facilities such as road, drinking water and electrification. The elders in the village have been dependent on daily-waged work and agriculture. 85% of the local population is tribal. They have to walk all the way to Nemmar, covering 10 km to get daily commodities, education and medical facilities.

As there are no proper bridges to cross the streams on the way, the villagers themselves have constructed footbridges by tying plastic ropes to the nearby trees. During the rainy season, parents assist their children on the way to schools on daily basis. It is a struggle to get the patients admitted to a hospital.

People living in these villages, carrying out agricultural activities, see their future bleak. The assurances by the elected representatives have remained unfulfilled.
