Govt to regularise jobs of contract sanitation workers

Last Updated 19 August 2016, 19:32 IST

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said of services of pourakarmikas (sanitation workers) working on contract will be regularised before March 2017 by carrying out a special recruitment drive.

Speaking at the inauguration of the state-level convention of pourakamikas here on Friday, Siddaramaiah said that a housing scheme for the pourakarmikas will soon be launched. The Bangalore Development Authority has already reserved 400 flats for them, he added.

He made a plea to the pourakarmikas not to pass on their profession to their children.
“Castes are based on profession. It should not mean that this profession should be carried forward by your children. Educate them and lead them to become doctors, engineers, lawyers and judges. It is discouraging that the literacy among the pourakarmikas is 5%,” he said.

Pourakarmikas attached to urban local bodies from across the state took part in the convention held at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru.
