Justice Bopanna recommended as CJ of Gauhati HC

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Karnataka High Court judge Justice A S Bopanna for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

The recommendation comes following the retirement of Justice Ajit Singh.

The notification reads “...that Justice A S Bopanna is a senior puisne judge from Karnataka High Court and is functioning there since his elevation. The collegium also considered the names of Justice H G Ramesh and Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh, who also hails from Karnataka High Court, and are senior to Justice Bopanna. Having regard to all relevant factors, the collegium unanimously finds Justice A S Bopanna suitable in all respects to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. The collegium resolves to recommend accordingly.

Profile

Justice A S Bopanna enrolled as an advocate on November 21, 1984, practised in civil, constitutional, company and service matters in the High Court as well as the civil and labour courts. He also worked as a legal advisor to Central Public Sector Undertakings, and worked as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from 1999 to 2005.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on January 6, 2006, and became a permanent judge on January 3, 2007.
