Heavy rain continues in Kodagu district

Normally, the district receives heavy rain in the month of June and July and moderate rain during August, September and October.

With heavy rain lashing, river Cauvery is seen overflowing in the district, throwing normal life out of gear at Bhagamandala.

The district had received 2094.21 mm rain till August in 2009, 1714.32 mm in 2010 and 2178.04 mm in 2011. Madikeri taluk has received 3033.26 mm rain till August in 2011.

Somwarpet taluk has received 1458.72 mm while Virajpet taluk has received 2042.10 mm.  

Loss

The loss incurred due to heavy rain since June is estimated at Rs 3629.23 lakh. Two persons have lost their lives in the rain. The family was given a compensation of Rs one lakh each. As many as 10 cattle were killed in the rain, incurring a loss of Rs 88,000.
 A compensation of Rs 47,000 was distributed to the owners of seven cattle.

As many as 105 houses have been damaged in the rain, incurring a loss of Rs 15.57 lakh. A sum of Rs 21.15 lakh has been paid as compensation to the loss. Agriculture crops grown in 3.2 hectare have been damaged in the rain. The estimated loss in CMC limits is Rs 70 lakh.

A loss of Rs 139 lakh has been incurred in three taluk panchayat limits in the form of damage to road, bridges, and canals. An estimated loss of Rs 2472 lakh has been incurred in Zilla Panchayat limits. The Chescom has incurred a loss of Rs 29.15 lakh.

In the last 24 hours, Kodagu district has received an average of 60.02 mm. This include Madikeri taluk-83.55 mm, Virajpet taluk-62.60mm and Somwarpet taluk-33.92 mm. Bhagamandala received highest of 111.60 mm rainfall.

The water-level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2858.37 feet. The inflow of water was 7542 cusecs. About 9100 cusecs water was released from the reservoir.

Overflowing

River Cauvery was seen overflowing near Kanive attracting large number of tourists. All the streams and ponds were seen overflowing.

The low lying areas, paddy fields were inundated in the district. The Kushalnagar-Shirangala road has been completely damaged following heavy rain.
