JD(S) members staged a protest against the State and Central governments here on Monday, stating that both the governments had failed to come to the rescue of farmers in the state.

The protesters formed a human chain and shouted slogans against the State and the Centre. JD(S) B A Jeevijaya said “farmers’ suicides have increased in the state.

Loan waiver

“However, neither the Centre nor the State have come to the rescue of farmers. There is a drought-like situation in the state and farmers are in distress over losing crops. Government should include Kodagu district in the list of drought-hit districts and should waive off Rs 7,000 crore loans borrowed by the farmers,” he demanded.

Government should not clear encroachments on lands belonging to small growers and support price should be announced for all the agricultural crops, he further demanded. The protesters also urged the government to increase subsidy given for fertilisers.
