Centre sanctions Rs 546 cr for flood relief

The Centre on Monday sanctioned over Rs 546 crore as additional assistance to Karnataka to take up relief works in flood-hit areas - mostly in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. 

The deicision was taken at a meeting of the high-level committee chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, said a statement. The committee has approved the additional assistance of Rs 546.21 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to Karnataka, it said.

The additional assistance has been approved following a report of an inter-ministerial team that visited areas hit by the floods and landslides in Karnataka including Kodagu district, the country’s largest coffee-growing region.The Karnataka government had sought sought Rs 1,199 crore to take up relief works in flood-ravaged areas of the state including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kananda, Udupi, Hassan and Uttar Kannada districts.

Apart from this, Karnataka has sought Rs 2,434 crore from the Centre for taking up drought relief works. The government has declared as many as 100 taluks drought hit. The Centre has already sent a high-level team to Karnataka for assessing drought situation and is likely to sanction funds after getting report from the team.
