It was a show of strength for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Hassan, the JD(S) bastion, on Monday. BJP candidate A Manju took out a procession with a large number of supporters before filing his nomination papers.

The city wore saffron look with BJP flags flying at every nook and corner. Supporters raised slogans in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi also. Manju submitted papers to deputy commissioner (also district returning officer) Akram Pasha at 12.48 pm after completing all the formalities. Manju's wife Tara, MLA Preetham Gowda and others were present on the occasion.

Earlier, Manju offered puja at Seetha Ramanjaneya temple and washed the feet of a pourakarmika couple.

Though BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa had arrived from Bengaluru, he did not enter the deputy commissioner's office. The movement of vehicles on BM Road went haywire due to huge crowd. The police diverted the vehicles on the alternative road.

Addressing party workers, Yeddyurappa called upon people to terminate "family politics" of JD(S). He claimed that the people of Tumakuru and Mandya had already made up their mind in this regard.
