Heavy rain at Mahabaleshwar, the birthplace of River Krishna, and rains in the catchment areas of its tributaries — Doodhganga, Vedaganga — have led to an increased inflow of over 63,081 cusecs  into the rivers in Belgaum district.

Six low-lying bridges submerged in Chikodi taluk of the district on Saturday, as the water levels in the rivers in the taluk increased.

Vehicles were forced to take a detour as the bridges were flooded. People in the villages have demanded that the height of the dams should be increased to tide over the problem.

The outflow from the Warana dam in Sangli district and Rajapur dam in neighbouring Maharashtra increased the water levels.

Assistant Commissioner Rudresh Ghali and tahsildar Rajashekhar Dambal visited the villages on the banks of the rivers and reviewed the flood threat, besides taking precautionary measures. There seems to be no imminent threat of floods, though. Outflow from Almatti dam would be increased based on the inflow, Ghali said.

Heavy rainfall continued to lash various parts of the district on Saturday.
Agumbe in Teerthahalli taluk received a record rainfall of 109 mm. Water levels in major rivers across the district such as Tunga, Bhadra, Sharavathi, Malathi, Varada, Kumudvathi and Dandavathi have increased drastically within a day due to incessant rainfall in catchment areas. The inflow of water into the Linganamakki dam was 27,904 cusecs and the outflow was 937.33 cusecs.

The water level rose to 1,788.15 feet against the maximum level of 1,819 feet. Water level in Bhadra dam rose to 159.2 feet against the maximum level of 186 feet and the inflow was 19,373 cusecs. The inflow of water into Tunga dam was 34,000 cusecs and the same quantum of water was being released.
