‘Tender for sand extraction in non-CRZ areas soon’

Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said tenders would be invited for sand mining in non-CRZ areas at the earliest.

“The relaxation in tender conditions, permitted by the screening committee headed by chief secretary, will be implemented during the pre and post tendering stages,” she said.

Sand mining in CRZ areas needed permission from the Karnataka Coastal Zonal Management Authority (KCZMA).

Responding to a query on impending water crisis in the district, Korlapati said a meeting has been called on Thursday to review the water crisis.

The officials have been directed to submit a proposal for de-silting Baje reservoir and other canals, rivers, ponds, which are the source of drinking water.

The work will begin shortly, she added.
