Mother accused of selling baby for Rs 2K

Last Updated 07 November 2014, 19:45 IST

Officials of the Child Protection Committee on Friday rescued a child whom the mother had allegedly sold for Rs 2,000.

The woman, Naghma Banu, had separated from her husband Irfan Pasha owing to marital discord. She was staying at the house of her acquaintance Sameena and her husband Chand Pasha.

Banu borrowed Rs 2,000 from Sameena, saying she wanted the money to buy clothes. Then she left the baby at the house but did not return even after five days. A worried Sameena informed Banu’s parents who gave in writing that they did not want the child abandoned by the mother.

Irfan got to know about the matter and made a complaint to the Child Helpline, alleging that his wife had sold the baby. Child Protection Officer Dr S Diwakar took the custody of the child. The baby has since been given to Vikasana Adoption Centre.

Dr Diwakar said it was unclear whether Banu had sold the baby. The matter is being investigated.
