Several students who have appeared for their pre-university supplementary exams and awaiting the results are worried as the counselling for admissions into premier institutions has already commenced.

The admissions into premier engineering colleges are based on the rankings that students get in the Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

However, some students in Karnataka complained that they have been unable to participate in the counselling process as the eligibility clause mandates that they have a certain minimum pass percent in pre-university board exams. A few students who had a lower score in PU exams have written the supplementary exams. However, with the results not being announced, these students are worried that they may not be able to participate in the JEE counselling.

A good rank in JEE Advanced exams is one of the criteria for admission. They should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards, according to the Central Board of Secondary Education.

"My son has a rank within 200 in JEE. He failed in mathematics board exams as he was only focussed on preparing for the competitive exam. He appeared for the supplementary exams conducted by the department of PU education. Since the results have not been announced, we are losing out on several opportunities," said Chidambar, a parent.

Similar complaints were heard from other parents as well. "It is because of the delay in supplementary results that we are unable to participate in counselling. The first round of couselling has commenced and we are told that we do not meet the eligibility criteria," said another parent seeking anonymity.

Officials in the Pre university department could not be reached for reaction.

Why the delay?

The supplementary exams that were scheduled for June 8 were postponed to June 29. The department had to postpone the examinations in the wake of graduate teachers constituency elections on June 8 and Jayanagar Assembly elections on June 11.
