Shimoga sizzles at 40 deg C

Last Updated 11 April 2011, 16:59 IST

The temperature is soaring since the last few days in the Malnad region and is set to go up further in the coming days, meteorological department officers told Deccan Herald. They say that denudation of greenery, surge in construction activity, increase in the density of vehicles and depleting groundwater resources are a few reasons for climate change.

However, no efforts are being made to control the climate change and hence the temperatures continue to rise, they said. Malnad, known for its greenery, heavy rains and moderate temperature is recording temperatures comparable to north Karnataka districts such as Raichur, Bellary and Gulbarga. The same day last year, the city had recorded a temperature of 40.5 degrees Celsius.

The rising temperatures will have impact on the crops, including arecanut.
