The Earthwatch Institute, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and HSBC would together launch India Regional Climate Centre (IRCC) at Sirsi, making it one of the five centres across South America, North America, Europe and China that would be involved in studying the impact of climatic change. Centre will be inaugurated on Nov 30 at Hotel Panchavati Sirsi.

IISc has been working here since 1983 at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, which is the first centre of excellence under the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The centre has been working on ecological research and documentation on various aspects of forests of the Western Ghats and forest management in Uttara Kannada.

In partnership with Earthwatch Institute of Britain, IISc is investigating the status of forests and the likely impact of climate change on forest-based livelihood of local communities.
