Housing Minister M H Ambareesh has urged Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu to allocate Rs 6,000 crore to the State under Rajiv Awas Yojana in the current financial year and give approval to 23 pending projects meant for providing shelter to the urban poor.

In a letter dated June 10, he has stated the State needs a minimum of Rs 6,000 crore to make 40 select cities and towns, including Bangalore, free of slums.

Approved projects

The Centre has already approved 27 detailed project reports amounting to about Rs 3,000 crore submitted by the State government. The remaining 23 project reports amounting to about Rs 777.92 crore are awaiting clearance, he added.

The State has already received assistance from the Centre to construct 28,118 dwelling units under basic services to urban poor project and 17,237 dwelling units under the integrated housing and slum development programme.

Permanent solution

The State has evolved a policy of rehabilitation and re-development of slums to ensure that slumdwellers get a permanent solution to their housing problem without the fear of being displaced.
