Bengaluru violence: NIA conducts searches at 30 places, arrests key conspirator

Last Updated 24 September 2020, 19:36 IST

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday arrested one of the key conspirators of the DJ Halli and KG Halli riots.

Sayed Saddiq Ali, 44, was involved in the attack on the KG Halli police station on August 11, resulting in the damage and destruction of public and government property, along with damage to the police station building and vehicles parked on the premises and surrounding areas.

Ali is a recovery agent with a private bank and was at large.

The NIA officials also conducted searches at around 30 locations in DJ Halli, KG Halli and surrounding areas in East and North Bengaluru. The officials seized air guns, pellets, iron rods, digital devices, DVRs and many incriminating documents against the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India (PFI).

The NIA had taken up the investigation into the two cases as per the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The CCB was investigating the case earlier and had invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) based on the evidence gathered during their probe.

The riots had erupted late on August 11 following a derogatory Facebook post by Naveen, the nephew of Akhanda Srinivas Murthy, MLA of Pulakeshinagar constituency. The CCB officials had got information about the interference of political leaders. Former mayor of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Sampath Raj, had skipped interrogation for the second time after testing positive for Covid-19.

Muzamil Pasha and other members of SDPI and PFI had gathered a mob at the MLA's house, police stations and vandalised the premises and resorted to arson.

Further investigation is on, the NIA spokesperson said.
