Two calves and an adult elephant which accidentally fell into an estate pond in Chelavara village near Cheyyandane were rescued by the Forest department and local residents early on Thursday.

The residents who were woken up from their sleep by the trumpeting sounds found three elephants trapped in the pond used to water a coffee plantation owned by Pattacheravanda Vasu Subbaiah. As the pond is deep, the jumbos, despite repeated attempts, could not come out.

A team lead by forest officials Roshni, Gopala, DFO Marikittaraju, Napoklu ASI Vishwanath, residents, fire and emergency services personnel tried to rescue the elephants by placing huge wooden logs in the pond. Finally, with the help of an earth mover, the elephants emerged from the pond and wearily made their way into the forest. The rescue operation had drawn a large gathering of people.
