Using modern technology on a pilot basis in Belgaum

Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai, on Thursday, said that a detailed report has been sought from officials regarding desilting of reservoirs to be taken up across the State.

Speaking to reporters, he said the comprehensive report will be ready in a month’s time. It is not possible to desilt through conventional methods and hence, there are plans to use modern technology to desilt tanks. RSVP company has been permitted to desilt Doopdhal reservoir in Belgaum, on a pilot basis.

If the technology works, then desilting can be taken up in other major reservoirs.

Impounding of water in Tungabhadra reservoir has come down by 28 tmc. A sum of Rs 100 crore was required to desilt the reservoir, he pointed out. He also said tenders will be soon invited to modernise the crest gates of KRS dam. The work will begin after the rain season.

The work on modernisation of Tungabhdra canal, which had to be suspended after model poll code came into force, will start in a week's time and expected to be completed by next month, Bommai said.
