Instagram extends Reels duration from 90 seconds to 3 minutes

With this, users will be able to create long-form fun skits or even collaborate with top brands to earn more revenue.

In 2020, Instagram launched the Reels feature, which allowed for just 15 seconds of content to be posted. Over time, it was extended to 60 seconds and later to 90 seconds in 2022.

Now, with TikTok's future uncertain, Instagram's chief has announced that the platform is doubling the duration of Reels.

"You can now upload reels up to three minutes long. We’ve historically only allowed reels up to 90 seconds given our focus on short-form video, but we’ve heard the feedback that this is just too short for those who want to share longer stories. Hope this helps," said Adam Mosseri, CEO, Instagram.

Instagram users can now upload and share Reels for up to three minutes on Instagram. With this, users will be able to create long-form skits or even collaborate with top brands to earn more revenue.

In the last few months, Instagram has introduced several new features that further enhance the user experience on the platform.

Users can now personalise names across DMs by adding nicknames for themselves or friends. However, nicknames will only appear in the DM chats and won’t change the original username anywhere else on Instagram.

Another notable feature is live location sharing on DMs. Users can share live locations for up to one hour or pin a spot on the map to coordinate arrival times, and activities or find each other in crowded spaces.

Live locations can only be shared privately in DMs, either in a 1:1 or group chat and will automatically expire after one hour.
