43 tonne rice meant for victims lies in warehouse

Last Updated 06 December 2018, 18:15 IST

Among all other relief materials which came from all over the state for the victims of Kodagu floods, 43 tonnes of rice is still at the warehouse in the new building of the Government Pre-university College, Madikeri.

Still, 510 victims have been given shelter at six relief centres in Madikeri and one relief centre in Kushalnagar and the relief materials donated by people are being supplied to the relief centres.

As many as 1,030 bedspreads, 250 blankets, umbrellas, sixty thousand soaps, cartons of toothpaste, cloth, utensils, hot boxes, water cans, sanitary pads, wheat and other grains are stored in the room.

A nodal officer said none of the items is being misused. The rice is not rotten. “Samples of rice have been sent to the laboratory to check the quality and the report will be out in the next week. Police guard is provided to the warehouses along with CCTV surveillance.”

As there are hundreds of victims in the relief centres, the left out relief material is not distributed to the villagers. The materials will be used for the victims who are taking shelter in the relief centres.

The school administration has requested the district administration to vacate the room by clearing the materials as there is a shortage of rooms to conduct classes for students. Relief materials are lying in classrooms from the last three months.
