DTC to catch ticketless commuters

Last Updated 31 August 2012, 18:48 IST

Delhi transport minister Ramakant instructed the Delhi Transport Corporation on Friday to act tough against ticketless travellers.

The minister said a week-long special drive to catch the offenders will commence from September 10.

Goswami has been assigned the transport department in the recent Cabinet reshuffle. In his first meeting with the department officials, the minister directed the authorities to educate conductors to issue tickets to all passengers, including those who avoid buying them on the pretext of being staff members of law enforcing agencies.

He instructed the DTC to appoint special magistrates to dispose of cases on the spot if a person is caught travelling without a ticket.

Travellers who are unable to deposit the fine amount will be punished according to the rules.

“A large number of people claiming to be on official duty have been travelling in DTC buses without tickets. It is estimated that DTC is losing around Rs 1 crore per day due to ticketless travel,” said Goswami.

Additional transport commissioner S M Ali was present at the meeting.
