A gang of three that robbed elderly car drivers by faking road accidents has landed in the police net.

Asif Khan alias Pistool, 35, Mehboob Pasha, 29, and Altaf Mohammed Suhail, 36, all from RT Nagar, would move around the city on motorcycles to identify senior citizens driving alone.

They would follow them and intercept them at deserted spots by staging road accidents.

While one of the suspects would brush his two-wheeler against the elderly person’s car and fall off, the others would confront the driver that he had run over their friend. The gang would then go on to rob the senior citizen.

Using this method, the gang robbed an elderly man on Infantry Road recently. The victim filed a complaint at the jurisdictional Commercial Street police station. Police analysed the nearest mobile phone tower location and identified Khan.

They picked him up for questioning and he spilt the beans. Police later arrested Mehboob and Suhail, too.

Police described Khan as a habitual offender who had been jailed.

After coming out on bail, he ganged up with Mehboob and Suhail, who are construction labourers by occupation.

Police have also learnt that it was Khan’s job to dispose of the booty.

His approach was simple. He would go to a jewellery shop to exchange the valuables. Since the shopkeeper would give him a bill for the new jewellery, he would later sell off the valuables without any difficulty, a senior police officer said.

The gang’s arrest has helped the police crack over 20 robberies reported from different parts of Bengaluru.

Police have recovered more than a kilogram of gold jewellery valued at Rs 33.1 lakh and two motorcycles from the gang.
