Man in police custody dies mysteriously

Vadivelu was picked up by Andhra Police on theft charges; relatives allege torture

Vadivel and Paramesh Reddy both residents of Beeranakuppa in the taluk was picked up by the Ramakuppam (Andhra Pradesh) police on the suspicion of committing theft at the house of Prasad Reddy in Maneendram village, about four days ago. Vadivel was released on Friday, but again taken into custody, allegedly on the statement of Paramesh Reddy that it was Vadivel who commmitted theft.

On Saturday, Ramakuppam sub-inspector Ashok Kumar and his staff brought Vadivel to Beeranakuppa to trace the booty. It is said Vadivel sustained grievous injuries as he fell from a hillock, and was dead by the time he was brought to the government hospital.

However, his relatives alleged the both Vadivel and Paramesh were tortured by the police and the former fell down from the hillock as the police kicked him. Sumithramma, the wife of Vadivel has lodged a complaint with the Anderson Pet Police. Sub-inspector Ashok Kumar has been taken into custody. Superintendent of Police Devajyoti Ray visited the village and assured suitable action according to law.
