Sporting equipment, apparel and footwear worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes in a fire which broke out in a shop at Sarojini Nagar market in south Delhi on Sunday morning, police said.

However, no one was injured in the blaze that was reported from Nagpal Sports, shop number 184, at around 10.50 am. Fire department officials suspect a short circuit to be the reason behind the incident.

The fire brigade officials took at least two hours to douse the flames and bring the situation under control.

“Four fire tenders were pressed into service. Thankfully, no one was injured,” an official said.

Lalit Mohan, Station House Officer of Sarojini Nagar police station, said the blaze was first noticed by the shop’s workers. “When they came to open the shop on Sunday morning they saw smoke emanating from the first floor of the shop. They initially tried to take control of the situation themselves, but informed us when they failed,” Mohan said.

Police informed the fire department, whose men reached the spot immediately. A case has also been registered at the Sarojini Nagar police station. “We are currently ascertaining the value of goods lost in the fire,” Mohan added.
