Six pilgrims, including three women and a child, were killed in a stampede in Bhavnath temple in the Junagadh township of Saurashtra region on Sunday evening.
Twenty people were also injured in the stampede. The stampede occurred during the annual Shivratri fair which is held in the ancient temple in the evening when the devotees had lined up for darshan.
What triggered the stampede is still not known. Senior district officials, including the Junagadh police chief Dipankar Trivedi, rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operations.
The stampede resulted in a massive traffic jam which took several hours to clear, officials said.
