Monorail cheaper, better than Metro: Nath

While several cities across the country are planning to come up with Metro services to promote public transport, union urban development minister Kamal Nath on Friday said all cities must also consider the option of monorail.

He said monorail needs less money compared to the Metro and can also connect areas in a city where Metro cannot.

‘Easy to build’

“Monorail is good. It is 40 per cent cheaper and can take much sharper turns than the Metro. It can climb up and down easily, which the Metro cannot do. And it is easy to build monorail stations,” Nath said.

He said money will not be an issue as monorails can be built under public-private partnership mode.

He encouraged the Delhi government and other states to go for monorail to improve public transport in their cities. He promised that the National Capital Region Development Board will supplement the process.

Nath said while the first monorail corridor will come up in Delhi from Trilokpuri to Shastri Park Metro stations, 10 more monorail corridors will come up in future.

The corridors can be built to supplement the Metro network across the Capital and will be useful in areas where the Metro cannot make much inroads.
