Simian menace

Monkeys are causing major trouble at the Tis Hazari courts complex here — thanks to people feeding the animals. The rampaging simians have been damaging court documents and even chewing on the electricity cables.

The court administrative official on Monday directed litigants and other visitors to the court not to feed the monkeys.

Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal, chairman, environment committee and judge of Tis Hazari courts, has asked visitors to avoid feeding monkeys and to throw the waste food in dustbins instead.

Nitin Ahlawat, secretary, Delhi Bar Association, on Monday said that rising monkey population is a big problem at court complex.

“As the courts complex is open, we cannot restrict the monkeys from coming,” Ahlawat said.

He appreciated the steps taken by the court administration to tackle the monkey menace and said it will help control their presence in the complex.

“The monkeys are not only damaging the court’s records but sometimes files and documents are found strewn in the corridors and power cables are found snapped,” the official noted.

He added that dustbins are turned upside down and litter is spread all over the complex that causes inconvenience to those who work at and visit the complex.

It has directed every court official to inform people that feeding of monkeys must be avoided.

The environment officer has also announced that no one should smoke inside the court complex at all the six district courts, and anyone found violating the no-smoking zone rule would be reported to nodal officers in the district courts.
