Four Delhi Police constables and a Delhi Secretariat officer were injured in an accident at Bhajanpura in north-east Delhi on Wednesday after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s convoy was breached by a cyclist.

Dikshit was returning to Delhi Secretariat after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Darmar Murugesan as chief justice of Delhi High Court at Raj Niwas. The accident happened near Hanuman Temple in Yamuna Vihar at 11:45 am. “The chief minister is safe and unhurt,” a senior Delhi Secretariat official said.

According to a statement by Delhi government, the incident took place when a cyclist entered the chief minister’s entourage in a wrong direction and the driver of one of the vehicles applied brakes abruptly to save the cyclist. Five vehicles in the convoy collided back-to-back due to which four constables travelling in one of the vehicles and an officer in the chief minister’s office were injured.

They were immediately rushed to the Sushruta trauma centre in Kashmere Gate and discharged after treatment. Sources at the hospital said two fingers of the Delhi Secretariat officer were fractured and they were fixed with a splint. “A constable’s ear was injured which has been stitched,” sources added.

Dikshit has expressed concern about those injured and instructed the health department to provide suitable treatment to all.

Police are not investigating the matter as no call was made to the police control room nor did anyone approach Bhajanpura police station to lodge a case. Eyewitnesses claimed that the cyclist was almost crushed between two cars but escaped unhurt.
