A 55-year-old non-resident Indian committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in a south Delhi hotel room on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The victim has been identified as Varghese, a native of Kerala, who was currently based in New York. He was found dead at Hotel Le Seasons in Mahipalpur extension, police said.
Varghese came to Delhi on October 5 and the staff of the hotel last saw him on October 8.
On Wednesday, when there was no response from his room after repeated attempts, the hotel staff called up local police.

Policemen opened the door of his room with another key. They found the victim lying unconscious and his face covered with a piece of cloth.

He was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors declared him brought dead.  After conducting a search of his room, police found a suicide note, clothes and few documents. In the note, he said that many of his relatives had taken loans from him and not returned them.

He held himself responsible for taking the extreme step.  Prima facie nothing was found missing from the room during the course of inestigation. It seems he  consumed a poisonous substance.

The NRI’s wife and children have been informed and his body has been sent to AIIMS for post-mortem, said a police official.

Police are waiting for the nod of his family members to conduct the autopsy.
Varghese for last several years was settled in the US and frequently visited India on official trips.
