Dad delivers own child in absence of midwife in hospital

Last Updated 04 May 2018, 08:14 IST

A "petrified" dad was forced to deliver his wife's baby in a UK hospital, because there were no midwives available.

Thirty-six-year-old Daniel Araujo begged for help when his wife began having labor pains.
However, the only staff member ran out to get help — and he was left to deliver the baby alone, The Sun reported.

The couple had been told to wait after Daniel's wife, Natalia, asked for a pain-relieving epidural. Two hours later she began to have labor pains.

"I put my finger around it and twisted Daniel (the baby) around to free him. He started to cry. We felt extremely relieved," Brazil-born Daniel said.

"I saw how it was done with my first two kids. If I wasn't there he’d have fallen on to the floor. I thought he was going to die," he said.

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has apologised and plans to investigate the matter.
