Before Kalaivani died, the police obtained a statement from her in which she said she was in love with Arvind, a man who lived near her house.

Her parents did not approve of the relationship, but Arvind was blackmailing and harassing her to marry him, police said and added that Kalaivani took the extreme step to escape the torment.

Cottonpet Police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against Arvind.

Boy hangs self

In another incident, a class IX student ended his life by hanging himself at his house in Papareddypalya Saturday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Vinod, 13, police said. The suicide came to light on Saturday evening after Vinod’s father, Jayaram, returned home from work and his son did not respond to knocks on the door.

Growing suspicious, Jayaram peered through the window only to find Vinod hanging from the ceiling fan in the hall.

He later broke open the door and retrieved the body. Jnanabharathi police have registered a case.

Police sources said that there was no suicide note and the reason for the death is still unclear.

Jayaram, however, said that Vinod had been depressed over failing an exam at school recently. Jayaram is employed as a welder.

Sushilamma works as a coolie and Jayasheel is a painter. Jayanthi was employed at a readymade garment factory in Goraguntepalya.

Although the exact reason for her suicide is unclear, Jayasheel told police that Jayanthi was frequently depressed about poverty in the family.
