Farmers involved in threshing on the roads is a common sight in the State. However, it has come under the notice of Public Works Department in the district which has urged the Superintendent of Police to stop the practice with immediate effect.
Reason: Increase in number of road accidents and peeling off the asphalt on the roads.
The Assistant Executive
Engineer of the department, in a letter written to SP has sought legal action against the people involved in roadside threshing.
The letter stated that threshing by the roadside was common on State highways — Bangarpet-Bagepalli Road, Hosakote-V Kote Road, Devanahalli-Kempapura and 20 other district highways passing through the Bangarpet taluk.
The Ragi crop, which is widely cultivated in the district, is being threshed on these roads currently.
As the crop is laid out on the roads, the vehicles particularly two-wheelers are at a higher risk of being involved in a accident as they can easily loose balance and fall. Though three-wheelers and four-wheelers are relatively safe, the stalk of the crops can jam wheels and damage other parts. As a result even the motorist are apprehensive about travelling on them, the letter stated.
It also mentioned of many requisitions received from drivers and motorists urging the
PWD to take action against such acts.
Bad roads
Threshing has also adversely affected the roads. Due to constant threshing the asphalt on the roads has peeled off creating potholes.
As funds are scarce and not allotted on time, even the maintenance of these roads is difficult, the AEE has stated in the letter and has requested the SP to immediately clear the roads of threshing.
