Suspicious husband kills woman over affair

Last Updated 21 February 2013, 20:44 IST

A 38-year-old man tried to hang himself after killing his wife at south-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Thursday.

Meera, 35, lived with husband Srinivas, two sons and a daughter in rented accomodation in Sangam Vihar block B. Police said Srinivas, a driver, suspected that Meera was in an affair.
Police learnt about the incident after Srinivas’ neighbour called the police control room around 6 am.

The couple’s 10-year-old son had intervened after Srinivas was seen trying to hang himself. Hearing the commotion, neighbours came to the house and informed police. A police team later found Meera lying in a bed with strangulation marks.

“She was taken to the AIIMS trauma centre, where doctors declared her brought dead,” a police officer said. Police also recovered a note on the spot written by Srinivas to his father-in-law.

Srinivas mentioned in the note that Meera was in an extramarital affair with a neighbour.
“He claimed that he tried his best to make the marriage work, but Meera was not interested. He also sought help from his father-in-law, but he was not of much help,” the officer said.

He further asked his father-in-law to look after his three children after his death. Srinivas was later arrested on basis of the note, and his statement.

Srinivas told police that he saw Meera talking on mobile phone when he returned home from work on Wednesday. He was not aware that Meera had a mobile phone, and in a fit of rage, decided to take the extreme step. He also had plans to kill his children, but could not do it, police said.

A case under sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of Indian Panel Code has been filed with Sangam Vihar police station.
