“The SPCBs should monitor the units (in SEZ) which are recycling/ reprocessing imported waste on a regular basis, take action against violations and keep the ministry informed,” the Environment Ministry which wants efficient implementation of the Hazardous Waste Rules, 2008, said in a circular.
India does not allow import of hazardous waste for disposal. Import of waste is allowed only for recycling or recovery or reuse.
“It is felt that the officers of the SPCBs should attend these meetings and assist the Development Commissioners in ensuring compliance of the environmental regulations...,” the circular added.
