Jolly progresses into last 16; State girls disappoint

Jacqueline loses advantage to go down against Rituparna
Last Updated 06 November 2009, 18:11 IST

The fifth-seeded Jolly defeated Harminder Singh of Chandigarh 21-6, 21-15 in the third round after posting a clinical 21-17, 21-13 win over Ankit Patel of Uttar Pradesh in the second round earlier in the day.

It was a bad day for the Karnataka girls, however, with six of them tumbling out, ending their challenge in the singles section. Jacqueline Rose Kunnath was knocked out by unseeded Rituparna Das of West Bengal, starting the slide.
Subsequently, Uttara Prakash, Priya Prakash, Poorvisha S Ram, Devika Ravindra and Reshma Karthik all lost their third-round matches.

Eighth seed Jacqueline fell to a determined Rituparna 21-13, 8-21, 18-21 in the third round. With the first game under her belt, the Karnataka girl seemed to be on a cruise mode. The 17-year-old, however, gave away some easy points to her opponent at the start of the second game and failed to recover.
Trouble then struck in the form of a power failure that forced the match to be stopped for 17 minutes. After the restart, the Jain College first PUC student was visibly upset with the turn of events and was seen complaining of bad light. The chair umpire asked her to play on and from then on, it was steady downhill for the Karnataka shuttler, who had beaten Muskan Aggarwal of Haryana 21-7, 21-7 in the second round.
Earlier in the boys singles, D Sunil Verma gave top seed B Sumeet Reddy of Andhra Pradesh a scare before losing 21-15, 9-21, 13-21 in the second round. The Karnataka lad suffered due to umpiring errors, with the turning point coming in the second game when Sunil was trailing 5-7.

A Sumeet stroke was called in when it looked clearly out and though Sunil tried to convince the umpire, it made no impact.  Later, in the third game the line umpire was changed.
“I was about to serve as I was sure that it was my point. I lost my cool and concentration and also the match,” said a Sunil, who was also upset with the service fault calls.
