Ask the mirror today what it reflects - and the answer would probably be, ‘I reflect not just your image but also that touch of elegance which you demand for your decor’. The mirror on the wall stepped out of the fairy tale to become a piece of utility and then again, has now graduated to be an integral part of interior décor.

From the living to the bedrooms and balconies to the kitchens, a mirror well-placed adds not just to the beauty but also brings in positivity – if placed right.

With time, the usage of mirrors has doubled in interior designing. “With wood getting costlier, mirrors are often used as replacement for background and in frames,” shares Divya Handa, interior designer from Aesthetic Interio. She adds that a mirror adds volume and expanse. “They are used as installation and even as accessories today,” she adds listing – brown, black and champagne coloured mirrors being the most popular currently.
Mirrors are also cut and made into frames by using motif designs and embellished fabrics and placed with a backlight, in contrast to the plain mirror used some years back. “People now prefer chic and cutting edge designs for both – the contemporary, modern looks or the venetian designs. People are looking for unique mirrors, with geometric designs, black Venetian borders and mirrors with metallic borders,” informs Rajat Singhi, creative director at Address Home.

The most important aspect, however, remains the placement of a mirror! “Installing mirrors opposite doors, windows or balconies reflects the open area in front and automatically brings the green environment inside the room, making it virtually large,” suggests Divya who believes that even a dead wall can be brought alive with an interplay of light and mirror.

But this should be avoided on the South and South West walls, to restrict any negativity, as per Vaastu shastra. “East signifies growth and North implies money so a mirror should be placed in these directions to increase prosperity,” advices Jayaa Nair, Vaastu expert at Arryama Concepts.

She also informs about the wide usage of mirrors for correction, as in the cases where “the North-east zone of a flat is cut, a mirror in placed in here will curb any monetary problems. Also, places which have a narrow entry passage into the premises can place mirrors on both walls to reduce the claustrophobic effect.

“Even in the bedroom, one must be very careful to not to place any mirrors oppostite the bed because whichever part of the body is reflected while sleeping, is sure to face health problems,” warns Jayaa suggesting that one should cover any mirrors in the bedroom before going to bed.

Another correction with the mirror comes in handy if one faces the door while cooking in the kitchen. “If you cooking in the West, hang a square mirror to enable yourself to see behind your back and end up looking at the East virtually,” says Jayaa.

Follow these simple measures and add elegance and wellness to your home!
