The Class 6 student from Gubbi, Tumkur, would experience immense and unbearable pain in her abdomen. The doctors at the district hospital in Tumkur referred her to Vani Vilas Hospital in the City.

Dr Some Gowda, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Vani Vilas Hospital, termed the condition as Uterus Didelphys and Unicolpus or double uterus. “Besides two uteri, we found a mass measuring six inches by six inches in the place of the left uterus, resulting in raising the uterus level from its normal position. This uterus was not connected to the vagina due to which the menstrual blood had accumulated forming a mass,” he explained.

He said, “I haven’t seen such a case in my 30 years of service as an obstetrician and gynaecologist. In fact, only one in 10 lakh female population is found to have such a congenital genital organ abnormality.” On the absence of the kidney, he said it was a birth defect and that uterus anomaly resulted in 30 per cent renal abnormality.

To remove the excess blood and create a connection between the second uterus and vagina, a team of doctors led by Dr Some Gowda performed laparotomy (a technique where incision is made to gain better access into the abdomen cavity) on her on November 15. “The two-and-half hour surgery surgery was successful,” he said.

The timely surgery has avoided Kusum from having future complications such as infertility, said the doctor. Kusum is doing well and will be discharged soon.
