Air ticket sale up by 300 pc

Potential fliers are scrambling for tickets following several airlines offering discounted fares for summer — the upcoming lean season — with bookings witnessing an increase of over 300 per cent in the past couple of days.

There has been a huge rush for booking tickets and many fliers have complained that they were unable to access airline websites as well as travel portals due to heavy Internet traffic.

The number of bookings made in the past two days was not immediately available with airline and portal officials. However, they said on Thursday that they are witnessing a jump of over 300 per cent in bookings in the past two days.

Jet Airways on Thursday joined the airfare war with discounts of up to 50 per cent for two days in its no-frills service JetKonnect.

The carrier has joined Air India, SpiceJet, IndiGo and GoAir, which have already announced special schemes to attract passengers in the lean summer season. These airlines had announced the schemes two days ago, and some of them are ending by Friday.

JetKonnect's scheme is valid on sales on Thursday and Friday, with travel up to April 15, like the offer of most other airlines, travel portals have said.

A one-way Bangalore-Delhi flight ticket is currently on offer at Rs 4,000, with the spot fare being more than Rs 11,000.

“Unlike last year, airlines have been more disciplined in discounting  advance purchase only. This is the right way to go about such promotions. We think there is still scope for last-minute fares to be higher while fares for passengers booking in advance should be brought down further,” said travel portal MakeMyTrip's CEO-India Rajesh Magow.
