A 23-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in front of her two children following an altercation with her husband at their house in south Delhi’s RK Puram late on Friday.

The woman told her five-year-old son to witness her suicide and then call up his father to inform him about it, police said.

Roma, who hailed from West Bengal, lived in a rented house in Nivedita Kunj with husband Sonu and two children aged one and five.

Sonu works with a petrol station in RK Puram Sector 3, while Roma used to work as a domestic help at the house of an Indian Army Brigadier.

“It looks like a suicide case, but no suicide note was found in the house. We are still investigating the case from all angles. Her husband is being questioned,” said a police officer.

Police said Roma took the extreme step after she got into a heated argument with Sonu. It is claimed that the couple fought on daily basis due to Sonu returning home late by an hour or two.

During questioning, Sonu told police that he works in the evening shift and reaches home by 10 pm.However, on Friday, he was late as he had some work at the petrol station.

Reached home late

Sonu reached home around 11 pm and when he knocked on the door, Roma refused to open it. Sonu later left the building.

Roma then allegedly made a noose using her dupatta and hanged herself, making her five-year-old son to witness the act.

Her other child was also present there. She had instructed her son to call his father after she died.

The child called his father on his mobile phone and when his father arrived around midnight, he opened the door for him.

Sonu found his wife hanging from a ceiling fan. However, the family stood by Roma’s hanging body in shock for hours before reporting the matter to police at 6.30 am on Saturday. A police team rushed to the spot and took the body to AIIMS, where a post-mortem was conducted.

“The five-year-old child narrated the entire incident and admitted to seeing his mother die. There was no external injury mark on the woman’s body,” the officer added.
