Godse plaque found on flyover in Rajasthan

Last Updated 04 February 2015, 16:14 IST

A plaque naming a newly constructed flyover after Mahatma Gandhiji's assassin Nathuram Godse was found in Alwar district, prompting authorities to immediately remove it and order an inquiry into it even as Congress expressed strong objection to the act.

The plaque of flex reading 'Rashtrawadi Nathuram Godse Pul' (Nationalist Nathuram Godse Bridge) was found pasted on the newly constructed flyover connecting Bhagat Singh Circle to Agrasen Circle in Alwar district yesterday.

The district administration immediately sprung into action and removed it from the flyover.

"I have no idea who pasted the plaque on the flyover which is yet to be opened for public formally. I have sought a report from the district collector which is expected in a couple of days," Divisional Commissioner, Jaipur, Hanuman Singh Bhati told PTI today.

He said that the district administration officials were busy in panchayat elections and anything with regard to the matter could be said only after the collector submits the report.

He also said that there was no plan to name the four-lane flyover after Godse.
Attacking the government over the issue, Congress demanded action against those who put up the plaque.

Former Congress MP from Alwar Bhanwar Jitendra Singh said that it was an insult of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.

"The government should take stern action against those who placed the plaque because it is the insult of the father of the nation," Singh said.

Congress vice president Archana Sharma said, "The government is trying to glorify the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi which is not acceptable."

People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) demanded that an FIR be lodged against those who put up the plaque on the flyover naming it after Godse.

"We demand from the district collector and SP to immediately lodge an FIR," the PUCL statement said.
