Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday assured the people of the North-East that he would work for their welfare.

Modi also came out heavily against those “attempting to provoke” the people of the North-East. He was referring to a goof-up by the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday in which the people of the North-East.were described as “immigrants.”

Modi said in south Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar that the word was written “wrong” and pointed out that his party had already accepted its mistake.

He also drew comparisons with an  incident in Bengaluru that had forced many people of the North-East to flee the city. The home minister of Karnataka, which had a BJP government, went to North-East states and requested the people to return. The government then ensured that the people lived with dignity.

He also accused his opponents of spreading “lies.” A BJP government in Delhi “will never bring down the retirement age of government employees from 60 to 58,” as was being mentioned in some reports. “These are outright lies,” he said.

Rubbishing “rumours” that he was among those who had made donations to a particular political party, Modi said he was surprised when he got the information checked. “The website showed that even someone named ‘Mahatma Gandhi’ had donated. Even ‘Obama’ had donated,” he said.

Modi’s speech at Virat Cinema Ground was his last before Delhi goes to the polls on Saturday. He said crowds attending his rallies this time were much larger than during the last Lok Sabha elections. It was an indication of the “direction the wind is blowing.”

He also trashed opinion polls which were uncharitable towards his party. He said that some newspapers had declared that 50 seats would go to a particular political party. “But they were not even number one the last time,” he said. ‘
