Local boy Suraj R Prabodh rallied from a set deficit to overcome Japan’s Kazuma Kawachi 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the Mysore Minerals Ltd Men’s ITF Mandya Open at the PET Sports Complex here on Monday.

Suraj began rather shabbily despite being ranked higher than the Japanese. Even in the second set, the top ranked Karnataka player was a break down trailing 1-2. He then got into his groove to make it 5-3 but lost the next two games before shrugging off the stress to win the next two games to force the decider which he comfortably won.

Third seed Karunuday Singh had no problems in seeing off the wild card entrant Nitin Kumar Sinha in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, S D Prajwal Dev enjoyed an easy outing as he beat Tejas Chaukulkar 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, the Sood brothers, Lakshit and Chandril, were stretched by Ronit Singh Bisht and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha before winning the tie 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.  Top-seeded pair of Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash and Ranjit Virali Murugesan beat S D Prajwal Dev and Suraj R Prabodh 6-4, 6-4.
