K S Eshwarappa, the leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, said on Monday that the State government was helping the corrupt, the rich, the sand mafia and the owners of sugar factories.

The government was not working for the poor, the farmers, the backward classes and dalits, he said. Eshwarappa was speaking at a meeting of the backward classes cell and the SC/ST Morcha of the party.

The former deputy chief minister said that the Congress had not fulfilled the promises it had made in the budgets of the last two to three years. Two teams of the party would tour the State to create awareness among the people about these aspects, Eshwarappa said.

He demanded that the government should release funds for the development of people from the backward classes and the dalit communities.

“We do not want the chief minister’s resignation, but let him release funds for the development of the downtrodden,” Eshwarappa said.

Eshwarappa said that the BJP government led by B S Yeddyurappa had released funds for the Haj Bhavan, besides giving Rs 1,000 crore for the backward classes and the dalit communities. The BJP had fulfilled the promises it made in the election manifesto. He demanded that the government should release a white paper on the implementation of the budget proposals.

He said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya had indulged in corruption in the purchase of beds and pillows for schools coming under the Social Welfare department.

Eshwarappa said that it was a mere drama that ‘illegally stocked’ sugar was being ‘seized’ from godowns where no stocks exist, before sealing the godowns.

Former MLA A R Krishnamurthy said that the Congress had cheated the dalits. He said that the hopes of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi announcing a special package during his visit to the State had been dashed.
