The Bruhat Bangalore Mahnagara Palike has allotted Rs 10.60 cr to fill up potholes mainly on the arterial and sub-arterial roads in the City.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Palike Commissioner G Kumara Naik admitted roads across the City were in a bad condition and that the continuos rain did a lot of damage to the roads. People, especially motorists had to suffer due to bad roads, he said.

“There is a heavy vehicular movement on the arterial and sub-arterial roads. Hence, potholes will be filled on these roads on a priority basis. We have already studied the condition of these roads during a survey. The engineers were also trained for two days to ensure quality of the construction,” Naik said.

The pothole filling work which began on Thursday will be completed in two weeks, he promised. The Palike will also develop around 350 km of road at a cost of Rs 417 crore, he added.

Naik said that the BBMP will not provide additional grants to maintain recently developed roads. “Between 2012 and 2013, about 105.55 kms of road was developed while roads for a length of 270 km were laid during  2013-14. The contractors, who were entrusted with this job, will have to maintain these roads and the BBMP will not fill the potholes on these roads”, he pointed out.

Naik clarified that the BBMP has spent Rs 22 crore to fill up potholes, and not Rs 600 crore as claimed. He dismissed the suggestion of providing compensation to the victims of road accidents, stating that potholes were not the only reason for accidents.
