Man dies after quarrel over touching feet

Last Updated 12 August 2016, 21:08 IST

Miffed with his brother-in-law for not touching his feet, a man fought with him and died during the scuffle in west Delhi’s Mayapuri area.

The victim, who suffers from asthma, was also roughed up by his wife when she intervened in the fight.

The police have arrested the brother-sister duo and both have been charged with murder.

“We are awaiting the post-mortem report to know the extent of injury. It’s difficult to know without the report what caused the man’s death,” said a police officer investigating the case.

The fight took place on Tuesday night when Dhirendra Bhadoria, 30, a sweetmeat seller in west Delhi’s Sagarpur, went to his brother-in-law’s house in Mayapuri phase-2 to persuade his wife Geeta, 28, to return home.

“Bhadoria’s wife was living at her parents’ house for the last two months as the couple had fought over his drinking habits,” said a police officer.

After reaching his in-laws’ house, Bhadoria asked his wife to return home.

As the couple discussed the matter, Bhadoria’s brother-in-law Gopal, 24, also came there. Gopal remained standing in a corner, without bothering to touch Bhadoria’s feet as a mark of respect.

Gopal was not happy with Bhadoria as he felt that he treated his sister badly, the officer said. “So he didn’t greet him by touching his feet.”

An angry Bhadoria made an issue of it and shouted at Gopal. Bhadoria then started punching Gopal. Seeing this Geeta intervened, and the sister-brother duo manhandled Bhadoria.
During the scuffle, Bhadoria, who suffers from asthma and had tuburculosis some months back, collapsed on the floor.

Scared, Geeta and Gopal then called up the police and Bhadoria was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

“We received a call about a scuffle, and when we reached there this man was lying unconscious on the floor,” the police officer said.
